ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Elgin police closed northbound lanes of Randall Road near Hopps Road after an overturned semitrailer truck caused a blockage on Thursday morning at about 8:30 a.m.—the road reopened around 3:30 p.m. and no injuries were reported.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Elgin Historic House Tour returns for its 43rd year on Sept. 6—Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering residents and visitors a chance to tour seven architecturally and historically significant homes on the city's northwest side. Bilingual docents will lead the tours and a 90-minute walking lecture will share key historical details.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Matt DeBoer—an alumnus of St. Edward—leads Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis after a tragic church shooting that claimed two young lives and injured several others. St. Edward students are planning a prayer service and letter drive to support him and help the community heal.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elgin residents are reminded that garbage, recycling and organics collection will be delayed by one day during the week of Sept. 1 in observance of Labor Day. There will be no collection on Sept. 1—services resume one day later than usual for the week before returning to the regular schedule next week.  City of Elgin
  • City officials are inviting seven residents to join the Martin Luther King Jr. subcommittee of the Human Relations Commission to plan events that honor Dr. King (including an annual celebration, food donation program, and scholarship program) with priority for applicants who have prior experience. Initial appointments will be made this year.  City of Elgin
  • Elgin City Council gave preliminary approval on Wednesday to replace the state’s 1% grocery tax with a local tax—this new measure will generate about $1.2 million a year to fund lead service line replacement. Some council members opposed the change, arguing it adds even a small burden on locals while helping maintain key infrastructure.  Daily Herald
