Elgin police closed northbound lanes of Randall Road near Hopps Road after an overturned semitrailer truck caused a blockage on Thursday morning at about 8:30 a.m.—the road reopened around 3:30 p.m. and no injuries were reported.

City officials are inviting seven residents to join the Martin Luther King Jr. subcommittee of the Human Relations Commission to plan events that honor Dr. King (including an annual celebration, food donation program, and scholarship program) with priority for applicants who have prior experience. Initial appointments will be made this year.

Elgin City Council gave preliminary approval on Wednesday to replace the state’s 1% grocery tax with a local tax—this new measure will generate about $1.2 million a year to fund lead service line replacement.
