- ➤ Brittain’s Express Oil and Lube, a 40-year family business in Elgin—known for its reliable service—will close its Larkin Avenue shop for renovations starting next Monday. Owner John Brittain said the shop will have steel work—concrete work and painting, and the closure will last several weeks. Daily Herald

- ➤ Hawthorne Hill Nature Center at 28 Brookside Drive in Elgin will launch four new Eco-Islands on Aug. 30 to improve pond health and create habitat for local wildlife. Robert Durmett—vice president of Johnson’s Nursery—will deliver a 30-minute presentation at 9:30 a.m., after which residents will help install the floating wetlands. City of Elgin
