COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 21, the Elgin Riverside Club honored Zac Tiknis as the 2025 Man of the Year at a dinner event celebrating his work in advertising and volunteerism. Tiknis, a club member since February 23, 2018 who has lived on the west side since 2015—earned recognition for a 25-year career and his commitment to local service.  Daily Herald
  • Two local groups are hosting the Skeleton Trot 5K and Marketplace Festival at Gail Borden Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.—registration ends Oct. 3; fees are $50 or $20 for kids ages 6 to 11—to support U-46 and library programs.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • An Elgin man, Darnell L. Rhodes, was convicted of kidnapping a woman on August 13 after a Kane County jury found he and co-defendants violently assaulted and confined her between March 13 and 14, 2023 — he now awaits sentencing on September 25.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Janus Theatre revived David Ives' satire School for Lies on its opening night at the Elgin Art Showcase and received a 3.5-star review for its smart dialogue and retro props — the production, led by Sean Hargadon with featured roles by Aaron Hoge and Julie Bayer, will run through Aug. 31 with showtimes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elgin Area School District U-46 invites community members to submit name nominations for its new middle school under construction at 2604 Rohrssen Road, which will serve 1,125 students when it opens for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in August 2027. A town hall is scheduled at Hilltop Elementary on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. and the board will vote on a recommendation on Nov. 3 + nominations are accepted until Sept. 19.  Daily Herald

  • Elgin launched Engage Elgin today—an online platform where residents can learn about city projects and give feedback on plans. The site lets people use surveys, votes, and maps to follow projects like Active Mobility and Climate Action.  City of Elgin
