- ➤ Gowns For Good, a local nonprofit, will host its Teen Gown Sale on Sunday, Aug. 24 at The Haight from noon to 7 p.m.—the one-day event will offer gently used and new gowns at discounted prices while raising funds for Hampshire High School's Female Empowerment Club. Daily Herald
- ➤ This fall, PADS of Elgin is hosting three events to raise funds for homeless support—a craft brew event on Sept. 18 at Plank Road Tap Room, a Neil Diamond tribute concert on Oct. 10 at South Elgin Parks & Recreation, and a bourbon tasting on Nov. 11 at The Distance Social in East Dundee. - ➤ Jerry Finis, co-founder of Pathway Senior Living and Inverness resident, was named chair of the Marklund board of directors and has served on the board since June 2020—he said he will use the updated strategic plan to guide the nonprofit in providing care to nearly 300 people across Elgin, Geneva and Bloomingdale. - ➤ The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley awarded 40 grants totaling over $535,000 to local nonprofits supporting mental health care, food pantries, and more at a July 24 reception in Aurora—its youth program enabled 41 high school students to help distribute $25,000 among nine agencies. - ➤ Elgin Police detectives Matt Vartanian and Andrew Houghton discovered Karen Schepers’ body after she had been missing for 42 years using their podcast 'Somebody Knows Something' and have been nominated for the 2025 America’s Greatest Detective award by Law and Crime network— the award will be announced in September at Denver’s CrimeCon CLUE Awards. - ➤ Elgin’s Janus Theatre updates School for Lies with shows starting Aug. 15 at the Elgin Art Showcase—tickets are $25 and performances continue through Aug. 31—while Aurora’s Paramount Theatre launches the regional premiere of Come From Away with previews scheduled from Aug. 20 to Aug. 27. Additional local productions include Forever Plaid at Skokie Theatre, Muffed at Chicago’s Factory Theatre, and a Living Newspaper Festival presented by Jackalope Theatre Company. Daily Herald

- ➤ Residents of West Highland Acres and Almora Terrace were relieved when the Kane County Board on Tuesday rejected a request to install a community solar electric facility on farmland near Brookside Drive and Almora Terrace. The board voted 12-8 against the proposal that would have placed nearly 11,000 panels on 26 acres — neighbors raised concerns about lost views and increased traffic. Daily Herald
