Good morning, Elgin.

Elgin honored 32 new U.S. citizens on Tuesday, June 24 at the New Citizen Recognition ceremony—each recipient received a certificate from Mayor David Kaptain and recognition from city council members and state officials for completing their path to citizenship.

Carol Wieg and Vivienne Bailey, co-chairs of the Elgin AAUW, announced the 2025 scholarship recipients, with Valeria Hernandez of Elgin set to receive the Betty Medearis Scholarship for education at Northern University and Maricarmen Paredes Lopez from Woodstock to receive the Brooke Transue Legacy Scholarship for health care administration — both winners earned the honors with strong academic records.

The Hill BMX racetrack at Elgin Sports Complex was named the host track for the 2025 BMX State Championship after earning the No. 1 ranking in the state due to its successful Beginner League program in its 35-year history — the event will run from September 26 to 28 and is expected to draw thousands of visitors to boost local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
