- ➤ New headstones replaced old, damaged markers at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin as an Eagle Scout project led by Drew Douglas in fall 2024 honored three long-forgotten Civil War soldiers—one of them Private Albert Force, a 15-year-old who died in Cairo. The project was completed with support from local volunteers and the Sons of Union Veterans. Daily Herald

- ➤ St. Sophia Church in Elgin will host its 46th annual Greek Fest from June 6-8 with free admission, offering authentic Greek dishes like gyros and spanakopita and a marketplace of crafts and a grand raffle with prizes up to $10,000 (525 Church Road). Live performances including Greek music and Jonny Lyons (and the Pride) will add to the festive atmosphere. Daily Herald
- ➤ Elgin native Daryl Nitz will celebrate Elgin Pride Day with his Daryl Nitz and Friends show on Saturday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Theatre in the Round in the lower level of Hemmens (45 Symphony Way), where tickets cost between $20 and $25 and his set will feature Broadway, pop, jazz and blues songs with audience participation and guest appearances. - ➤ Learning On the Go is a summer program that began Monday at Cornerstone Park in Elgin where over 60 kids danced and sang while listening to stories in both English and Spanish—families get weekly take-home gifts and help from local groups. The eight‑week program runs through July 21 and aims to give parents ideas to prepare their children for school. Daily Herald
