- ➤ A young woman was badly beaten on May 13 at a Carpentersville restaurant after attackers used a slur based on her sexual orientation; Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said she is still investigating and may add hate crime charges for 19-year-old John Z. - ➤ Two juniors at Central High School in District 301 earned perfect ACT scores of 36—Caleb Goldstein and Sanay Gulati joined the top 0.2% of test takers nationwide. District officials credit a focused curriculum for helping students feel ready for college entrance exams. Kane County Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Elgin was awarded $3 million through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program to upgrade the Kimball Street Bridge and Fox River Trail underpass—improving safety by eliminating the need for users to cross the busy street. The project will enhance connectivity and is part of a state capital plan to support communities with high needs. City of Elgin
- ➤ Elgin will host Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 26 to honor military personnel who died in service as organized by the Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association in cooperation with the city. The services will start at 8:30 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery, continue at Lakewood Memorial Park and Elgin Veterans Memorial Park, and conclude at Bluff City Cemetery with a 75th anniversary tribute to the Korean War — details on weather updates will be available — while attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
