- ➤ On Tuesday, Gail Borden Library unveiled its reimagined KidSpace—a nature-themed play area with three workshops, a 15-foot bubble wall, and a baby garden. Donations from local groups including the Seigle Foundation, Consumers Credit Union, the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation, and the Golden K Kiwanis Club funded the improvements. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An Elgin man, 19-year-old Malachi Y. Snipes, fired a gun on the 100 block of S. Commonwealth Avenue just before 1 a.m. on May 13 and was charged with four felonies—aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm without a firearm owner's identification card, aggravated unlawful use of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm—with his next court appearance set for today. - ➤ On May 18 at 4 p.m., the Great Elgin Pipe Organ Tour will feature a free concert at the Church of the Brethren General Offices at 1451 Dundee Ave showcasing the historic Harttman/Kurtz organ, the oldest surviving pipe organ in North America. Music director Jeffrey Neufeld will lead the performance with help from his son and retired cellist Mark Kuntz—continuing a rich musical tradition in Elgin. Daily Herald

- ➤ Elgin Community College will hold two spring commencement ceremonies on May 17 at its Building J Events Center — the Career and Technical Education Ceremony at 10 a.m. with speaker Jack McGraw and the University Transfer Ceremony at 2 p.m. with speaker Grace Sakabunda. - ➤ The city of Elgin is near completion of cleaning up and restoring Tent City, having removed all structures and cleared 284 tons of debris. Crews installed 2,500 feet of fencing — a final inspection will be done before seeding begins to finish restoration by the end of the month. City of Elgin
