- ➤ Former U-46 superintendent José Torres (65) died May 2 in San Juan, Puerto Rico after a brief illness, ending a nearly 40-year career in education. Elgin Mayor David Kaptain said Torres was a respected leader who built programs for equity in local schools (leaving a lasting impact on the community). Daily Herald
