- ➤ Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elgin will host its 50th annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring strawberry shortcake, chocolate-covered strawberries, vintage jewelry, crafts by local groups, an antique fire truck ride, and a strawberry patch—net proceeds benefit five local agencies including a mission trip, a child development center, a scout troop, the YWCA, and Operation Sweet Live. - ➤ Hanover Township’s 10th annual Sprint 2 Spring 5K run/walk will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Hanover Township Izaak Walton Youth Center on 899 Jay Street in Elgin—this event will raise funds to help low-income residents obtain dental and medical services. Registration is available online through Friday for $35 and onsite for $40, with participant check-in from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. and a postrace party until 10 a.m. Daily Herald

- ➤ A Rolling Meadows police sergeant named Carlos Saez was put on leave and charged after a traffic dispute became physical on the 1100-block of Dundee Avenue in Elgin on April 29th when a gun fired—an internal investigation is underway. ABC7 Chicago
- ➤ Kane County authorities said they declined to press charges against a 79-year-old Elgin resident after he shot a 29-year-old intruder who entered his home on the 800 block of Carr Street Sunday morning—police said the younger man had left a nearby gathering and was taken to a hospital. - ➤ The Elgin Heritage Commission honored local preservation champions at the annual Mayor’s Awards for Preservation held Tuesday, April 29 (at Hemmens Cultural Center), recognizing individuals and organizations for safeguarding the city’s historic architecture, neighborhoods and cultural resources. The ceremony also presented nine heritage building plaques (awarded to homeowners who researched the history of their properties) to highlight ongoing efforts to preserve Elgin’s unique character. - ➤ The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will honor U-46 Fine Arts Coordinator Jaimie Abney—Giraldo with the Educator of the Year Award during the May 3 concert at Hemmens in downtown Elgin.
