COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CASA Kane County has formed a Cross-County Advisory Council to boost support for children entering foster care after nearly 700 were served in 2024; community leaders from health care, law enforcement, education and nonprofits will work together—focusing on early intervention and sustainable change. The council, still evolving, aims to break barriers so families can access help before problems grow.  Kane County Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 26, the Holy Trinity Quilting Queens will host a talk on secret quilt codes used on the Underground Railroad at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 Division St. in Elgin—Connie Martin, an Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speaker, will share her family history during a 60-minute multimedia slide presentation with a question-and-answer session. The free event runs from 2 to 4 p.m.—offerings will help cover quilt supply costs donated to Lutheran World Relief.  Daily Herald
  • Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 357 Division St in Elgin will host the next stop on the Great Elgin Pipe Organ Tour on Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m.—the event will feature a 1964 Austin Organs Inc instrument and works by Vincent Lubeck, Samuel Barber, Denis Bedard, and Robert Powell performed by music director Matthew Wahl along with flutist Bethany Wahl and saxophonist Jeremy Zimmer; admission is free with a free-will offering to support the church’s music ministry.  Daily Herald

  • AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois will hold three Advocacy Breakfast Collaboratives to protect vital aging services from proposed federal cuts. The events are scheduled on May 2 at Maravela’s Banquet & Catering in Ingleside, on May 5 at Senior Services Associates in Aurora, and on May 12 virtually & open for registration to ensure advocates can speak up before decisions are made.  Daily Herald
  • Before you start any home or business project, check if a building permit is needed so the work follows city safety standards and building codes. Projects like remodeling, window or roof replacement, structural changes, and new construction require permits—and owners of historic properties must get a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes.  City of Elgin
