CRIME NEWS

  • Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser announced no criminal charges will be filed against four deputies after a May 24 car chase on Randall Road ended with the fatal shooting of Aurora resident James Moriarty and his K-9 Hudson — the investigation found the officers justified even though one violated camera policy.  Kane County Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Elgin and the Elgin Short Film Festival are now accepting film entries for the 17th annual event, which will be held on Sept. 20 at Hemmens Cultural Center. Filmmakers worldwide can submit films (20 minutes or less) for a $40 fee by Aug. 1 and a $50 fee by Aug. 22, and top films will be honored with red-carpet screening and cash prizes.  Daily Herald
  • Two suburban synagogues are hosting a community Passover seder tonight at Congregation Kneseth Israel in Elgin with Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates and have sold out with 82 guests. The seder, which begins tonight and marks the start of Passover, will feature diverse traditions such as international kosher wines and a new Haggadah—offering a way for those without family celebrations to join while honoring a historic story of freedom.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elgin will continue housing 39 former Tent City residents at the Lexington Inn and Suites through the fall using state grant funding that incurs no extra cost, city manager Rick Kozal said Wednesday. The city has approved a new contract for overnight security—costing about $9,000 per month—and is finishing cleanup and installing fencing by April 21.  Daily Herald
  • Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham announced his office certified the 2024 payable 2025 Tax Extension for the Treasurer’s Office to ensure tax bills reach property owners on time—tax bills will be viewable online later this month.  Daily Herald
