BUSINESS NEWS

  • Elgin planning and zoning commissioners approved a petition on Monday from Jane & Buds Cannabis Dispensary to open a second recreational cannabis store at the old Boston Market on S. Randall Road. Owner Matthew Hagglund said his company will invest up to $800,000 in renovations including new sidewalks and landscaping as the proposal waits for city council review.  Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Congregation Kneseth Israel in Elgin and Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates will host a Passover Seder on Saturday, April 12 that explores global traditions and features a charoset bar and international kosher wines. The event is part of Passover Across America—its program includes expanded children's activities and special music for all ages.  Daily Herald
  • Young musicians from the Golden State Youth Orchestra and the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras will perform together at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12th at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. Over 150 students exchanged letters to build connections before the concert — which will feature works by Gershwin, Bizet, and Florence Price.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elgin Navy veteran James Duhr received $28,371 in refund checks after a property tax error pushed his bill on a vacant parcel over 500%—he will send the refunds to his mortgage company to replenish his escrow balance. The Cook County Assessor's Office corrected the error and is processing another certificate of error for an additional refund of about $9,000.  ABC7 Chicago
  • The Elgin Heritage Commission will honor seven individuals and organizations at the Mayor’s Awards for Preservation on Tuesday, April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Hemmens Cultural Center (45 Symphony Way) for their work in preserving local historic sites; the ceremony will also award nine heritage building plaques to homeowners.  City of Elgin
