Good morning, Elgin. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Illinois residents can help fight pediatric cancer by buying a sub at more than 80 Jersey Mike’s locations this month and adding a round-up donation for Cal’s Angels. The campaign will conclude on March 26 — all sales will go to the nonprofit — and the chain’s CEO will match up to $1 million in donations.  Kane County Chronicle
  • After severe storm damage forced First United Methodist Church in Elgin to close its sanctuary, church leaders announced that Sunday worship services will be held via Zoom at 10 a.m. on March 23 and in-person at Cornerstone United Methodist Church on March 30. Internal ministries will resume meeting on March 31 as repair work continues—officials hope to fully restore the building for service by Advent.  Daily Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Morbid Mementos, a new downtown Elgin store, opened on March 1st and offers unique macabre art including oddities like taxidermy and vintage artifacts—owner Kelli Naughton created the shop to work on her handcrafted art without the constant packing and unpacking of markets. The store operates at noon Wednesday through Sunday and its early success shows strong local support.  Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 14th, Kane deputies and Lombard police stopped 51-year-old Robert B. Lochhead of Mount Prospect after a pursuit on I-90 in which he was suspected of trying to run over three pedestrians; he is now held in DuPage County jail with a court date set for April 14th.  Kane County Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Directors of Head Start centers — including those in Elgin — said technical problems with a federal payment portal on Jan 28 delayed payroll and led to temporary layoffs, and they worry that future cuts under Project 2025 could endanger the program. The funding freeze has raised fears that essential child care and education services may be reduced if similar issues recur.  Shaw Local
