EDUCATION NEWS

  • Melissa Barbosa-Guzman, a 49-year-old attorney and ECC alum, is running for the Elgin Community College District 509 board to boost education and job training for local students — she plans to use her 30 years of board experience to support new programs like the Manufacturing and Technology Center and improve outreach to underrepresented communities.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corey D. Dixon, a 42-year-old government administrator who has served on the city council since 2017, is running for re-election on a platform that focuses on replacing residential lead pipes and addressing homelessness. He plans to use federal, state and local funds — his campaign emphasizes collaboration and careful oversight of taxpayer money.  Daily Herald
  • Erik Bosque Pena, a 43-year-old union laborer and small-business owner, is running for one of four seats on the Elgin City Council—he says he will bring working families’ concerns by fixing old water pipes and planning for the Kimball Street Dam review.   • Diana Alfaro, a 40-year-old Latinx business development manager, is running for Elgin city council and plans to strengthen the local economy and upgrade water infrastructure amid rising inflation and retail sales leakage—she brings over 10 years of regulatory and community engagement experience to her campaign.  Daily Herald
  • Mark W. Smith, a 57-year-old regional security specialist with committee experience, is running for one of four available Elgin City Council seats. He thanks current council efforts for addressing homelessness and proposes a new brick—and-mortar facility to offer medical, mental health, and employment services while planning town hall meetings for increased transparency.  Daily Herald
  • Maggie Beyer, a 76-year-old retired administrator—former chair of the Elgin Township Committee on Seniors—is running for one of four seats on City Council. She says her plan will use a multiyear $150 million upgrade to replace lead water pipes, repair bridges, and revitalize downtown to help reduce rising crime and improve public safety.  Daily Herald
